Training and Education Leads to Increased Sales

Muncie Product Application School or MPAS participants learn the basic mechanical and hydraulic power principles which relate to our industry. The Muncie product line is covered in detail and students are provided with complete Muncie product catalogs, application catalogs, and service parts manuals. Participants learn to use Muncie's Quick Reference PTO application catalog and to select Muncie pumps, valves, reservoirs, and other products. Participants also learn to use Muncie's M-Power customer assistance computer software and navigate the Muncie web site.

The July 13th-17th class in Tulsa, OK has space for 9 additional participants. The four day MPAS is offered free of charge less room and board. The unique setting of our Tulsa facility allows students to learn the basics of our products with the added benefit of viewing our manufacturing processes first hand.

Continuous Improvement

Continuous Improvement (CI): the seeking of small improvements in processes and products, with the objective of increasing quality and reducing waste. Continuous improvement is one of the tools that underpin the philosophies of total quality management and lean production.

The Muncie Warehouse and Distribution Center has further enhanced its capability to fill orders quickly and accurately. A Kaizen Team designed and implemented an assembly area for gasket and rebuild kits with the goal of eliminating lead times and increasing accuracy.

The successful event lead to a 74% reduction in travel with a corresponding 77% improvement in efficiency.

Expanded Capabilities Coming to Muncie’s Atlanta Facility

Muncie Power Products is pleased to announce that, Roger Phillips, formerly of Hydro/Power Inc., has joined Muncie Power Products, as a Customer Service Manager in our Kennesaw (Atlanta) Mobile Power Center.

Roger has many years of experience selling Muncie products and is a Certified Fluid Power Specialist. He also studied Mechanical Engineering at Southern Technical Institute.

In the coming weeks Muncie will upgrade this facility with equipment and inventory to support a customer hydraulic build center.

Question of the Month

Q: What is the difference between Torque and Horsepower?

A: Torque and horsepower are relatively simple, yet are often misunderstood. Simply stated, "Torque" is a measurement of rotational "Force" and "Horsepower" is a measurement of "Power."

Torque refers to the amount of twisting force, or in our field of reference, the amount of twist available at the PTO output shaft to drive a piece of equipment. It is measured in foot-pounds and refers to the amount of push at a given radius, so one foot-pound is one pound of push acting on a shaft with an arm one foot long. Torque is what gets a piece of equipment to rotate. It is described by the formula: T = Force x Radius.

Horsepower is a measurement that tells how much work can be done over a period of time. The term "horsepower" was coined by James Watt in 1782. He measured how quickly a horse could turn a mill wheel of a certain radius, estimated the amount of force the horse needed to exert to turn the wheel, and came up with a value of 33,000 foot-pounds per minute. So 1 Horsepower = 33,000 ft-lb/min. It can also be calculated using the formula, HP = T(torque in ft-lb) x RPM (revolutions per minute) / 5252 (a conversion constant).

So if we have a piece of equipment that requires 120 ft-lbs of torque to rotate and must run at 1500 RPM, the horsepower required is equal to 120 x 1500 / 5252, or 34.3 horsepower. If the piece of equipment required 300 lb-ft to rotate and operated at 600 rpm, the horsepower would be 300 x 600 / 5252, or 34.3 horsepower. However the PTO used in the first application may not be capable of the torque required to drive the second application. This is why torque is used when selecting PTOs.
